　　少妇瑞姬蓝伯特(Reggie Lambert)在夫婿被人谋杀后发现自己开始也被三名男子追踪。在友人的告知下, 才知道原来夫婿生前曾经与四个人一同参与一项非法的勾当, 窃取并独吞了一笔巨款。当不明白赃款下落的瑞姬(赫本饰) 正苦于歹徒的骚扰时, 一个Peter Joshua 的瑞姬(赫本饰) 就在骗政治流亡者为了援助一个对抗杀害他父亲的刺客在委内瑞拉的丛林里寻求金矿。在这里他遇见了内心纯真如孩童, 却被当地居民误以为是邪魔而打算将其纵火烧死的 Rima (赫本饰) 的故事。
　　作为一部一流的悬念影片，《谜中谜》的风格却是迥异于同种类型的电影的，它大胆地在紧张悬念中融入了风趣幽默的喜剧色彩，这种情况极为少见，影评人则赞誉该片为“上乘的轻松喜剧片 ”，两位主演加利.格兰特和奥黛丽.赫本配合默契，他们的款款深情看起来就像是真实的，其他几位主演，如沃尔特.马修，詹姆斯.科布恩的表演也很出彩。影片非常卖座，而赫本还因此片获得了英国电影学院颁发的最佳女主角奖。
