观众和媒体对于本季的关注，几乎全都放在Morgan Jones（Lennie James）这个角色身上——毕竟这个角色起到桥接该剧和母剧《行尸走肉》（The Walking Dead）的重要作用，也是《行尸走肉》和《行尸危途》开播以来第一次出现情节交叉的情况。因为《行尸危途》的故事时间要比《行尸走肉》早很多，因此观众在《行尸危途》中看到的Morgan是「过去的Morgan」——《行尸走肉》首集中的Morgan，甚至更早。在遇到Rick等人之前，Morgan有过另外的朋友、另外的敌人和另外的威胁。@

第四季的故事地点主要设定在德州，故事时间可能会发生一定幅度的时间跳跃。Alicia Clark、Victor Strand和Luciana Galvez都还活着。其中Luciana已经消失了很长一段时间（这是第三季Luciana中途离开后我们第一次见到这个角色），她如何回归、如何找到Alicia和Strand都耐人寻味。Madison Clarke和Nick也仍然是核心角色。除了这五位，其他回归角色的身份本季都可能发生变化（有些不再是常规角色，有些大幅减少了戏份，有些干脆不再出现）。
除了Morgan之外，本季还新增了多个重要角色：
Jenna Elfman扮演生存者Naomi，在僵尸末日时代完全有能力独自生活——事实上她已经独自生活很长时间了。当她遇到Madison及其家人后，自然而然地保持着高度戒心。随着剧情发展，观众会发现她为什么对人总是冷冰冰的，为什么与别人保持距离。即便如此，她还是与某些角色（特别是Alicia）产生了某种共鸣，这让她自己都感觉惊讶。她有时给人幽默的感觉，有时又给人轻浮的感觉。
Maggie Grace扮演生存者Althea，她看起来就像是《行尸走肉》中的Maggie。她在僵尸末日时代的生存技能，很大程度上来源于僵尸危机爆发前积累的经验。她携带了一些令人印象深刻的武器，好奇心很强，而且善于理解别人，这给了她战术优势。Althea从来不相信「不劳而获之利益」，只相信自己的艰苦奋斗。她有一个坚定的目标，Strand似乎对这个目标颇感兴趣。
