◎简　　介
　　　　清廷在甲午战争中失败，签下马关条约割让台湾。一八九五年五月，日本能久亲王赴台接收。同月，丘逢甲建立台湾民主国，反抗日人统治。苗栗地方的秀才吴汤兴（温升豪 饰）受丘逢甲所托，筹备义军。吴汤兴宅心仁厚，深孚众望，妻子黄贤（杨谨华 饰）深明大义，一时间，当地豪杰徐骧、新竹姜绍祖等人纷纷投入麾下，义军同仇敌忾，欲将东洋番打出台湾。 　　义军利用地形优势与日军展开游击战，部分弥补了武器的劣势，同时，不甘被异族统治的山贼林天霸也带着自己的队伍加入了义军。六月二十四日，日军发动了针对桃园和新竹的进攻，义军的处境愈发困难，但吴汤兴等人的坚决反抗，激发了更多台湾人抵抗的决心。
