一名美国士兵被枪杀的案件让杰克意识到事情必有蹊跷，他几次想要调查，却遭到了军方的阻挠和警告。与此同时，杰克的好友帕特里克上尉（托比·马奎尔 Tobey Maguire 饰）所表现出的异常举动亦传达出了某些秘密的讯息。
