　　加布里（罗宾·威廉斯Robin Williams饰）作为一档深夜聊天节目的电台DJ，有着这个城市众多的拥趸，小男孩彼特就是其中一员。事实上，加布里首次接触彼特，是在朋友送来的一本书稿上。这本书的作者是彼特，上面写着他的种种不幸：自小遭父母虐待，为大人们提供肮脏的性服务。加布里和彼特在电波中交流谈心，渐渐筑起亲密的情谊。
但是，怀疑随之而来。彼特的故事背后还藏着有一个叫唐娜（东妮·克蕾特Toni Collette饰）的女人，她是彼特现时的养母。在唐娜那里，加布里猜测到彼特的故事远远没有表面那样简单。他奔赴往彼特居住的小镇，以图一探究竟。加布里在镇上见到了双目失明的唐娜，这个女人让加布里陷入了更大的谜团当中，到底是否存在过彼特这个男孩，也成了不可知的神秘事件。
