　　生活在旧金山的摄影师丹尼尔有一个心爱的独生子米克。

　　米克离开美国，来到日本高知县的某个小镇当上了一名英语教师，业余时间则热衷于作画。然而安稳的日子过了不到一年，米克就在一场交通事故中离开了人世。

　　丹尼尔十分伤心，他在二战中失去了自己的父亲。父亲被日本士兵杀死，儿子又在日本丧命，令他对这个国度产生了难以摆脱的厌恶情绪。然而为了收集儿子留下的画作，他还是只身来到了日本。

　　在高知，丹尼尔结识了像亲姐姐一样善待米克的原老师，以及他的上司和同事们。丹尼尔得知儿子在日本生活得很幸福，心中不经产生了矛盾的感情。

　　一天，丹尼尔遇到了米克的一个学生，这个有认知障碍的少女送给老人一幅画。丹尼尔由此了解到，米克尔在日本结了婚，并且有了后代……
