　　公元300年的夏天，罗马国王迪奥克里田的宫殿被一系列来历不明的大火烧毁。受国王宠幸的侍卫队长塞巴斯蒂安在一次庆典活动上被指为放火焚烧宫殿的罪魁祸首而受到了流放。他被放逐到茫茫的沙漠之中，随行的还有六位士兵。在荒漠里，这些男人无所事事，白天练习格斗对打。而到了傍晚，日渐高涨的性欲却促使他们对彼此的身体产生了兴趣……影片大胆重现了1700多年前天主教烈士圣塞巴斯蒂安的生平，但把他塑造成一个普通罗马士兵，被发配到边塞，但他跟其他士兵格格不入，并坚决拒绝别人对他的性要求，最终为此献出生命

　　本片是英国先锋派导演Derek Jarman的第一部长片。这部影片叙事结构非常随意，探讨了同性恋欲望和圣·塞巴斯蒂安的偶像式位置的关系。同时贯穿全片的诗歌以及类似帕索里尼式的影像风格令其傲然于实验电影之列。贾曼的处女作看起来不像一般的独立片，而更像是软色情片。影片洋溢着男性的美，但又有一种只有前戏没有高潮的自我压抑，大概是暗示主人公的状态。
