这档选秀节目移植自欧洲的The Voice of Holland（荷兰之声），荷兰之声一经播出便稳稳吸纳3百万电视观众(荷兰总人口为1650万人)。


The Voice由三个阶段组成：盲眼海选（Blind Audition）、队内擂台赛（Battle）以及最终的直播秀（Live Show）。四位导师将会在盲眼海选环节中通过大约一分钟的选手演唱来决定是否邀请该选手加入自己的队伍。如果多位导师选择了同一位选手，选择权交给选手自己。

每一队的参赛者都会得到各自导师的指导和开发。在节目第二阶段，导师们将会让自己队内的两名选手共同演唱一首歌曲，再由导师决定谁进入直播赛。最终的决赛将会由剩余的选手在现场直播的比赛中，通过观众的投票选出The Voice的获胜者。

第三季引入新规则

(1) 在擂台赛环节，每位导师每人有两次机会“偷取（Steal）”，让别队淘汰的选手有机会起死回生。

(2) 每位导师无法保证能有队员进入最后的决赛，决定权在人民手中。

第四季四位导师分别是：Usher 、Shakira、 Adam Levine 、Blake Shelton
