　　故事发生在1978年的德国，埃尔文（沃尔克·斯彭格勒 Volker Spengler 饰）曾经是一个风华正茂的小伙，在经历了一场惊心动魄的变性手术之后，世上再也没有埃尔文了，有的只是一个名叫艾薇拉的姑娘。艾薇拉行如此极端之事是为了一个名叫安东（高夫莱德·约翰 Gottfried John 饰）的男人，他是她曾经的情人，可是如今，当艾薇拉再度找到安东时，安东的冷漠让她心碎。
　　安东不仅装作不认识艾薇拉，还和她的好友左拉（英格丽·卡文 Ingrid Caven 饰）发生了关系，这让艾薇拉无法接受。艾薇拉回到了曾今的妻子伊雷娜（伊丽莎白·崔森纳 Elisabeth Trissenaar 饰）的身边，希望能够回归家庭，却被妻子拒绝。人生接连遭受的艾薇拉彻底失去了活下去的信心和勇气，死亡成为了唯一的选择。
