　　圣诞节马上就要到了，精灵们正在夜以继日地为全世界的孩子准备圣诞礼物。根据圣诞老人法则，圣诞老人必须在今年圣诞节前找到一位妻子，才可以继续他的工作。恰好圣诞老人的儿子查理因淘气被列入本年度坏孩子名单，圣诞老人只得返回家中一面加强对查理的管理，一面寻找可以恋爱的对象。
　　为了不让圣诞老人的离开影响到精灵们的工作，小精灵克里斯和布纳德利用新发明的机器复制了一个塑料圣诞老人，由它代替圣诞老人管理这里的工作。
　　回到家的圣诞老人很快恢复了他斯考特先生的身份，查理所在学校的校长卡洛尔对查理非常头疼，她多次找到斯考特希望他能够多花一些时间在孩子身上。通过接触，斯考特逐渐爱上了卡洛尔，他用魔法给卡洛尔带去欢笑，卡洛尔也开始对斯考特产生好感，但当斯考特向她透露自己就是传说中的圣诞老人时，卡洛尔认为自己被戏弄，愤怒地将斯考特轰出了家门。
　　正在斯考特为了找不到妻子而烦心时，克里斯突然出现。他告诉斯考特塑料圣诞老人私自更改了好孩子、坏孩子名单，并让所有的小精灵停止生产玩具，而是用煤块作为礼物发给全世界的孩子。斯考特必须返回北极，阻止他的行为。但斯考特的麋鹿却因贪嘴吃下了太多的巧克力而无法行动，幸好牙仙子及时出现，将斯考特和克里斯送回了北极。
　　出乎意料地，塑料圣诞老人复制了大量玩具部队，斯考特和克里斯刚刚返回便被擒。塑料圣诞老人驾着雪橇准备开始送礼物，此时查理和卡洛尔突然出现，是牙仙子带他们来到了这里。被解救的斯考特迅速追赶塑料圣诞老人，终于在他离开北极前将其带回。卡洛尔终于相信这世界上真的有圣诞老人存在，而那个人竟然就是身边的斯考特。
　　在精灵们的祝福声中，斯考特和卡洛尔举行了简单浪漫的婚礼，此时斯科特要驾着雪橇给孩子们送礼物了，查理第一次为自己拥有这样神奇而伟大的父亲感到骄傲，而卡洛尔也将开始她“圣诞太太”的奇妙生活。

　　本片的导演迈克·莱拜克曾导演过多部热门电视剧集，包括曾获得艾美奖的热播电视剧《六人行》，本片则是他执导的第一部电影。片中扮演圣诞老人的蒂姆·艾伦也是美国最著名的喜剧演员之一，曾主演《野蛮城市》、《银河访客》等影片。由他主演的《美化家庭》是ABC电视台最受欢迎的喜剧节目，为他赢得过无数大小奖项，其中包括1994年金球奖以及连续4年的最受观众喜爱奖。
