　　改编自十八世纪英国流行名作家威基可连斯的小说，该作家是狄更斯的好友，曾有两本奇情小说《月亮宝石》和《白衣女郎》。
　　贵族出生的巴索五岁时疼爱他的母亲因为肺结核而去世，他的大哥也因故被冷酷专制的父亲逐出家门，他在严峻的父亲管教下长大成 人并 进入牛津大学读书。 有一天巴索到海边游泳却不小心受了伤，适时出现了一名好心的男子约翰解救了他，经由约翰的介绍而认识了茱丽亚，没想到巴索却不可自拔的爱上了茱丽亚，但是因为他们的阶级不同无法得到巴索父亲的认同。虽然如此巴索还是一意孤行，决定和茱丽亚秘密结婚，并且答应把他的豪宅送给茱丽亚。
　　一天晚上巴索去找约翰却发现他竟然和茱丽亚有染，在气愤之馀他把约翰痛殴了一顿，决定和他们断绝一切关係。但是没想到茱丽亚的父亲却来告知巴索她已有了身孕，虽然无法确定是他自己的小孩，巴索仍然遵守承诺，要他父亲将豪宅交给茱丽亚，而他的父亲因为无法接受这个事实，也把巴索赶出家门。
